It was two in the morning. Kris had just left, and Coleen shook what was left of her fifth beer, gulped down the rest, and then laid out across the floor.

“You feel okay?” Madison asked, opening the door to let Timbre out. She came over and sat down on the ground next to Coleen, and then finished the remainder of her beer.

“Yeah,” Coleen said. She felt loose and fuzzy. “Just a little buzzed.”

Madison leaned over and kissed her. “You can stay here tonight, if you want,” she offered.

“Okay,” Coleen agreed, without hesitation. “Yeah, I want to.”

Madison smiled. “You sound a little more than buzzed.”

“I’m not, really,” Coleen said. Then she drew her hands up and pulled Madison back down for another kiss. “Dammit, I can’t believe you didn’t even tell me it was your birthday.”

“I know. I’m terrible,” Madison admitted. “But I wasn’t lying—I actually forgot about it until Kris reminded me.”

“Why do you hate birthdays so much?” Coleen asked, looking up into Madison’s eyes as she gazed back down at her. Madison shrugged.

“I don’t know. I’ve just… never really been a fan. Maybe it has to do with my parents. My dad hated to celebrate his birthday too. Always said it was a waste of time, just another day. I guess I picked that up from him.”

“Is that a traditional Korean thing too?”

Madison shook her head. “No. Just a ‘my dad’ thing.”

“Well… it’s alright if you’re still not a fan of celebrating your birthday. Next year, you, Kris and I can do something small again, together.”

Madison smiled, and wondered where they would be this time next year. For a moment, a nagging thought crossed her mind: what if they didn’t work out? It was a ridiculous and terrible thing to think of, and she hated herself for thinking it, but conditioned thoughts were hard to avoid. She really liked Coleen a lot. No, it was much more than that, but those carefully erected mental boundaries kept her from admitting it to herself.

What if they didn’t work out? What would happen to Timbre Wolf? What would happen to her dream?

She shut her eyes and willed the thoughts away. You’re a terrible person for even thinking about that, she thought. It didn’t make the question disappear. It only stayed in the back of her mind, hiding in the shadows.

“Are you okay?” Coleen asked, concerned. “Did you drink too much?”

“I’m good,” Madison smiled back. She leaned down and kissed Coleen again, their eyes closing. Coleen drew her hand up around Madison’s neck and she gently pulled her closer. Madison moved her leg over Coleen so that she was on top of her, her knees saddling up to her hips. Over the past few days since they’d opened themselves to each other, their kisses had been quick and innocent. Madison had craved deeper kisses and wanted to get even closer to Coleen, but she knew that she wasn’t experienced and didn’t want to rush her into anything. Now, Coleen was leading, and she pulled her down towards her, their kiss becoming stronger and more passionate.
